Angels prepare for Pujols

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) ? C.J. Wilson parked his car and laughed while signing autographs for faceless fans who handed bats, balls and cards to the pitcher from the other side of a brick wall.

An early rite of spring training complete, Wilson, one of the Angels' new big-ticket additions, headed to the clubhouse.

"You're the man, C.J.," one fan yelled to the left-hander, who signed a $77.5 million contract in December.

"Word," Wilson said.

He's the man for one day, and one day only.

On Monday, Albert Pujols arrives.

The former St. Louis slugger, who rocked baseball this winter by signing a roughly $250 million contract with the Angels and instantly transforming them into the team to beat, will report Monday to begin the next chapter of his career. The plans are for the three-time MVP to greet his new teammates, take some grounders at first base and then batting practice inside Tempe Diablo Stadium before holding a news conference at a resort hotel across the street.

The Angels have booked an amphitheater to handle the expected media crush.

"Being in the game this long, you're always excited this time of year," said Scioscia, who played 13 seasons for the Dodgers and is beginning his 13th season managing the Angels. "Spring training is really a fun time, seeing the guys again and getting them together and getting on the field.

"I'll admit there's a little different excitement this year."

It's been that way since Dec. 8, when Pujols agreed to the second-biggest contract in history and joined the Angels, whose owner Arte Moreno spent a combined $331.5 million during the off-season remodeling his team into perennial power.

Before connecting for his first homer for the Halos, Pujols has already altered his new club dramatically. He's sold tickets and merchandise. He's raised the Angels' profile and their expectations. And, as one of the most feared hitters of his generation, Pujols has given them a frightful presence in the middle of their lineup, one that keeps pitchers awake at night.

"He's going to improve the offense single-handedly because he's such a force," said Wilson, who went 16-7 last season for the Rangers. "We saw that last year with St. Louis. If you take him out of that lineup, it's not very threatening. But you put him in there and it's 'Oh man, we've got to pitch to (Lance) Berkman, (Matt) Halladay and (David) Freese.' I think he will have the same effect here.

"The guy's got a career .418 on-base percentage or something ridiculous. He's going to be on base, at the worst, a lot for these guys. There are only so many guys you can put on base before you have to pitch to somebody. If the 5-6-7 guys stay within themselves, they'll have a lot more pitches to hit and a lot more chances to drive runs in because of him."

Mark Trumbo didn't mind being kicked off first base and moved over to third to make room for Pujols. Raised in Orange County, Calif., Trumbo pulled for the Angels long before he played for them. He's got a good sense of the team's history, and the signing of Pujols, who many thought would stay in St. Louis, caused a reaction unlike anything before it.

"It was awesome, he said. "I haven't seen a buzz like that ? ever," he said.

After Pujols and Wilson signed, the Angels held a pep rally for fans, who have been stocking up on No. 5 jerseys for months and figure to buy more as the season wears on.

"I live near the stadium and drove by and saw the massive amount of cars," Trumbo said. "I guess I wasn't surprised because those are monumental signings."

As for being one of Pujols' teammates, Trumbo isn't sure what to expect. However, he intends to make the most of being around the nine-time All-Star.

"It hasn't quite set in for me, honestly," he said. "I guess you kind of imagine what the benefits will be, not only for him but for everyone around him. A lot of guys might be vying for that No. 2 spot. It's going to be a real pleasure just watching him work. I hear he's a workaholic. I've yet to meet him, but people say he's a special person and a special player.

"I just look forward to picking his brain and shadowing him. I don't have to ask questions. I can just watch what he's doing and try to pick up on that. There's a reason he's as good as he is."

Scioscia knows this spring may be unlike any he's experienced before. There will be more attention on his team, more media demands for him and his players, who must adjust to being in a superstar's shadow.

Pujols will bring it all.

And as Scioscia is concerned, it's all good.

"I can't imagine it being anything but positive," he said. "Albert is good for a reason, and it's not just natural ability. He respects the game. He takes as much pride in his defense and baserunning as he does in the batter's box. He's a professional so it will be a positive to be around him and that chemistry shouldn't be an issue.

"We'll worry more about the on-field chemistry, how he folds in with Howie (Kendrick) at second, the right-side defense. All that stuff is much more of a focus on doing that then there is wondering what will happen in the clubhouse. It will all be positive in the clubhouse."

Using the latest, three-liter version of the Colombo engine and a slightly lengthened 750 Monza chassis, the Ferrari engineers created the 250 Monza. The V12 was of a similar specification as used in the 250 MM constructed early in 1953. Breathing through three quad-choke Weber Carburetors, it was good for at least 240 horsepower.

Four of these ?hybrid? chassis were eventually constructed. Two of them were clothed by Pinin Farina with a design similar to that fitted on the 500 Mondial, and the other two received Scaglietti bodies in the style of the 750 Monza.

Backstage with Oscar de la Renta as show begins (AP)

NEW YORK ? All the trappings of the big fashion show were there: models, music, and lots and lots of people. But to one of the world's most famous designers, all that fuss was invisible. When it was time for the models to hit the runway to present his next collection at New York Fashion Week, the only thing Oscar de la Renta saw was the clothes.

Watching the legendary 79-year-old backstage Tuesday night as he prepped the models moments before sending them down the runway, it was clear that de la Renta is virtually immune to the circus and hype that accompanies New York Fashion Week, the twice-annual previews of designer clothing. Never mind the hundreds of tastemakers in the audience from around the world, from buyers and journalists to celebrities and loyal customers, a group that on this night included Vogue editor Anna Wintour, a close friend. Never mind the scores of assistants backstage trying to carry out his vision. For de la Renta, despite decades in the business, each show commands his total attention as a personal unveiling of a labor of love.

For the 15 minutes it took to parade his fall collection on the catwalk, with a reporter from The Associated Press observing by his side, de la Renta sat on a plain stool just out of sight from the crowd, carefully examining each look and speaking to no one. It's a process he's gone through literally hundreds of times ? with two, three or sometimes four fashion shows a year ? since launching his label in 1965. But it never gets old.

"Oh my goodness, show day is not like any other day," de la Renta said an hour before the lights went up. "Regardless of how good or bad a collection might be, it's a letdown after the show is over. It's done. Something you've worked on for months is just over. It's like a wedding day, but at least then you get the wedding night."

He added: "This is a part of you."

He checked the music, tapping his toe to "Maniac" from "Flashdance," and greeted familiar faces popping in pre-show, from his wife Annette to Bergdorf Goodman CEO Jim Gold to stylist Rachel Zoe, who showed de la Renta photos of her baby on her phone. Throughout it all, he was a vision of calm, with no last-minute changes, no barking of orders. The backstage swarm included dressers, makeup artists and publicists, and he seemed to know them all by name as he nodded approvingly at their work. But he also said the buck stops with him.

"I check every look sitting here. They'll tell me to let her (a model) go, but I see everything, every hair out of place or thread that is hanging," he said. "I have to be sure it's coming out the way I envisioned it."

At Tuesday's show, he gently held the arm of each model until he was ready for her to start moving ? in spite of producers telling her to hurry up. He fluffed the tiers of a gown on its way out. And he sent the last model, Arizona Muse, to join the others in the group lineup that ends every preview even though she was a few beats behind the others. The handlers had told her she wasn't going to make it in time for the carefully paced finale parade of all the outfits, and some yelled at her to stop. But de la Renta signaled go, and despite being out of step, she ended up with a few extra moments in the spotlight to show off a frothy silver gown.

The audience couldn't tell whether the delay was a glitch or for effect, but when the applause started as she stepped onto the catwalk, de la Renta smiled. He followed, going out for his bow ? actually a quick wave ? mouthing "Thank you, thank you."

At most shows, security guards usually swoop in at this point, cutting off audience access to designers and their backstage havens. De la Renta, though, lingered near the door, sans entourage, for a quick word with the American Vogue team and flamboyant editor of Japanese Vogue, Anna Della Russo. He watched editors, stylists and retailers make their way to the elevators, giving the occasional handshake or peck on the cheek.

Another show was over, and it's hard to tell if it's his years of experience or personality that allowed him to take it all in stride. Not that other designers are crazed egomaniacs. The process of putting on a fashion show, especially from the inside, is far more professional than Twitter photos and reality shows might suggest.

But even with someone as sunny as Michael Kors, a success story with his recent IPO and celebrity as a "Project Runway" judge, or a creature of California cool like Johnstone Hartig of Libertine, a label that retools vintage designer pieces, frantic backstage moments are not uncommon. Kors' crew on Wednesday morning managed a long line of interviews and well-wishers. There was no way he could peek out at the crowd before his show without causing a frenzy. And Hartig spent the moments before his first model stepped out switching shoes and giving last-minute instructions, adjusting a catwalker's hat and mussing up another's hair; he seemed to have nervous energy to burn.

De la Renta, in contrast, did nothing more than a little pacing before settling into his stool for the show. He seemed to have no second thoughts. He was just excited to get it over with while simultaneously savoring it. He still loves to see it all come together when the models line up, put their smiles on and step out into the spotlights.

"Tomorrow I start the new collection. Really, it started yesterday when I had to decide the colors of next season," de la Renta said. "And then this is a memory. I won't remember this collection. You can ask me in a few days about the blue dress and I'll ask you, `What blue dress?'"

That was Hunter S. Thompson?s take on the TV business, but the phrase has been applied with equal accuracy to the writing side of the film industry.

?Where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs.?

Like poetry really, and less hyperbolic than you might think.? Because being a screenwriter who actually gets paid for what he/she does ain?t easy.? Never has been, never will be.? But people keep trying, every day, arriving in Hollywood with a laptop and a dream, looking like so many well meaning douche-bags as they clutter up my Starbucks for hours on end.

And even though it?s futile to speak ill of the dream factory, here are the top??? reasons you, aspiring writer out there, should save the bus ticket, give up now and get a real job.

YOU WILL DEVELOP AN ADDICTION

Might be booze ? hell, it?ll probably be booze ? but it could be coffee, Internet porn, Kabala or daytime TV, but you will find your poison. It?s the sad byproduct of spending hours at a time in front of a computer screen. You won?t have ?work colleagues? per se, or normal human interaction on a regular basis. And under these circumstances, a writer turns to whatever he/she can that isn?t writing.? Your hobby is now your career, so you?ll need to find a new ?other thing to do.?? The other thing will not be health.

YOU WON?T SUCCEED

I heard a story once about a documentary crew who went to a supermarket in LA and asked everyone walking out how their screenplay was coming. Nine out of ten responded with some variation of ?Great? or ?How did you know??? There is nothing but competition out here, and the more people there are trying to do what you do, the less likely it is that you will make find your way to any sort of employment.

Trouble is, being a writer is seen as the simplest way to get into the movies. You don?t need looks ? your humble author being a perfect case in point ? you don?t need to know an F-stop from a bus stop, and you don?t need a dad who owns a studio.? All you need is some screenplay formatting software and desire to humiliate yourself on the page.

Want some numbers? There were roughly 600 movies released in 2011.? There are roughly 12,000 members of the Writers? Guild of America, who all have sold something already and are trying to do it again. You are up against some very talented, smart, funny people who already know some folks in the business.? You are screwed.

YOU WILL NOT MEET WOMEN

I say this for all the male writers out there who dream of being on set and catching the eye of some young ing?nue. This will not happen. Only directors get laid on film sets.? There?s the old joke ? very un PC ? about the Polish starlet who slept with the writer to get the part.? There is a reason for this joke.? And even if you make it, while you will be well paid, you are the first one they will fire if things go wrong for any reason. You will not be respected.? You may not even be allowed on set to watch them film your script.? Henry Kissinger said power is the ultimate aphrodisiac.? You will have none. Adjust your expectations and libido accordingly.

YOU WILL NOT GET RICH

The median income for a Writers Guild of America writer is around 5,000 a year.? The average ? yes, you?re a writer, you can figure out the difference between median and average ? is in the six-digit range, but realize there?s about 1% of guild members who are near the top who make just a shit-ton of cash.? These are the writers with very long driveways.? You will not be one of them.

YOU WILL GET FAT/FATTER

See, and you thought you might starve.? Well no one starves in Hollywood, but you will sit for hours on end, eat horribly and generally start to look like your father or mother, or perhaps the person who ate your father or mother.? Wanna stay thin?? Get a job that puts a premium on movement over grammar.

OTHER WRITERS WILL START TO SEEM NORMAL

Do I sound normal? See, that should be terrifying.

YOU WILL RUN OUT OF IDEAS

Yes, you?re an idea person, but your creative well is only so deep. A good sing that this has happened to you is when your hero?s occupation, before he accepts the ?call to adventure,? is that of? you got it, a writer.? Because we all write what we know, what you will know is the tyranny of the blank page.? This will be, or should be, a terrifying moment.

You will also start to notice that every other idea you have has already been done, or is being done by someone who already gets paid for it. (The Internets are great for this. Want to re-crush your dream, check out Deadlinehollywood.com or one of many other sites to see how ?your script? already has stars attached.) This is when you should give up and get on board with your plan B.? If you do not have a plan B, please find one.

Of course, if writing is simply the only thing you can do that?ll make you happy, or you?re simply not that bright, none of this will matter. You will insist on moving forward, following that ?dweam within a dweam? (thank you Bill Goldman) that may lead to modest notoriety, inevitable divorce and the ability to charm cocktail part guests with tales of abuse at the hands of Hollywood?s elite.

So if we?re gonna do this, let me start doling out some tips and advice that I wish someone would have given me when I rolled over the hills into Hollywood too many years ago to properly recall.

You won?t be getting any of that ?follow your dreams? crap, but in future posts I will try to be as straight with you as possible, culling the wheat from the BS, pointing out rookie mistakes even I still make on a regular basis, and generally offering guidelines to help you realize that this isn?t the line of work for you.
