Apple, Samsung, HTC and Sony sued over graphics rendering patents

Image

Sometimes, you have to go all-in. Why not sue all the leading smartphone makers at once? That's what Graphics Properties Holdings is doing, channeling the ghost (and intellectual back-catalogue) of Silicon Graphics. Filing six cases against Apple, Samsung, RIM, HTC, Sony and LG, the lawsuits reference floating point calculations for rendering graphics, something that the company received patent approval for only yesterday. GPH claims that several phones, including the iPhone, Galaxy S II and BlackBerry Torch, infringe on its intellectual property. Layman legal types can sniff around the patent in question at the source below.

Nokia Pushes Its Emerging Market, Low-Cost Strategy With The 800C, China?s First CDMA Windows Phone

Nokia-Lumia-tiles-1A big step today for both Nokia and Microsoft in its bid to be at the center of the huge smartphone growth currently underway in China and other emerging markets: Nokia today paired up with China Telecom to launch the Nokia 800C, the first CDMA Windows Phone to hit China, and the first of Nokia's Lumia line of high-end devices tailored specifically for that market. The two also said that it would be following this up with a lower-cost CDMA handset, the 610C, in Q2. This handset is especially crucial in testing whether Nokia will be able to retain its smartphone leadership in emerging markets as it continues its transition from Symbian to Windows Phone, and Android continues its low-cost march up the sales charts.

Many billions of rocky planets in the habitable zones around red dwarfs in the Milky Way

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? A new result from ESO's HARPS planet finder shows that rocky planets not much bigger than Earth are very common in the habitable zones around faint red stars. The international team estimates that there are tens of billions of such planets in the Milky Way galaxy alone, and probably about one hundred in the Sun's immediate neighbourhood. This is the first direct measurement of the frequency of super-Earths around red dwarfs, which account for 80% of the stars in the Milky Way.

This first direct estimate of the number of light planets around red dwarf stars has just been announced by an international team using observations with the HARPS spectrograph on the 3.6-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile [1]. A recent announcement, showing that planets are ubiquitous in our galaxy used a different method that was not sensitive to this important class of exoplanets.

The HARPS team has been searching for exoplanets orbiting the most common kind of star in the Milky Way -- red dwarf stars (also known as M dwarfs [2]). These stars are faint and cool compared to the Sun, but very common and long-lived, and therefore account for 80% of all the stars in the Milky Way.

"Our new observations with HARPS mean that about 40% of all red dwarf stars have a super-Earth orbiting in the habitable zone where liquid water can exist on the surface of the planet," says Xavier Bonfils (IPAG, Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers de Grenoble, France), the leader of the team. "Because red dwarfs are so common -- there are about 160 billion of them in the Milky Way -- this leads us to the astonishing result that there are tens of billions of these planets in our galaxy alone."

The HARPS team surveyed a carefully chosen sample of 102 red dwarf stars in the southern skies over a six-year period. A total of nine super-Earths (planets with masses between one and ten times that of Earth) were found, including two inside the habitable zones of Gliese 581 and Gliese 667 C respectively. The astronomers could estimate how heavy the planets were and how far from their stars they orbited.

By combining all the data, including observations of stars that did not have planets, and looking at the fraction of existing planets that could be discovered, the team has been able to work out how common different sorts of planets are around red dwarfs. They find that the frequency of occurrence of super-Earths [3] in the habitable zone is 41% with a range from 28% to 95%.

On the other hand, more massive planets, similar to Jupiter and Saturn in our Solar System, are found to be rare around red dwarfs. Less than 12% of red dwarfs are expected to have giant planets (with masses between 100 and 1000 times that of Earth).

As there are many red dwarf stars close to the Sun the new estimate means that there are probably about one hundred super-Earth planets in the habitable zones around stars in the neighbourhood of the Sun at distances less than about 30 light-years [4].

"The habitable zone around a red dwarf, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on the surface, is much closer to the star than the Earth is to the Sun," says St?phane Udry (Geneva Observatory and member of the team). "But red dwarfs are known to be subject to stellar eruptions or flares, which may bathe the planet in X-rays or ultraviolet radiation, and which may make life there less likely."

One of the planets discovered in the HARPS survey of red dwarfs is Gliese 667 Cc [5]. This is the second planet in this triple star system and seems to be situated close to the centre of the habitable zone. Although this planet is more than four times heavier than Earth it is the closest twin to Earth found so far and almost certainly has the right conditions for the existence of liquid water on its surface. This is the second super-Earth planet inside the habitable zone of a red dwarf discovered during this HARPS survey, after Gliese 581d was announced in 2007 and confirmed in 2009.

"Now that we know that there are many super-Earths around nearby red dwarfs we need to identify more of them using both HARPS and future instruments. Some of these planets are expected to pass in front of their parent star as they orbit -- this will open up the exciting possibility of studying the planet's atmosphere and searching for signs of life," concludes Xavier Delfosse, another member of the team (eso1210).

Notes

[1] HARPS measures the radial velocity of a star with extraordinary precision. A planet in orbit around a star causes the star to regularly move towards and away from a distant observer on Earth. Due to the Doppler effect, this radial velocity change induces a shift of the star's spectrum towards longer wavelengths as it moves away (called a redshift) and a blueshift (towards shorter wavelengths) as it approaches. This tiny shift of the star's spectrum can be measured with a high-precision spectrograph such as HARPS and used to infer the presence of a planet.

[2] These stars are called M dwarfs because they have the spectral class M. This is the coolest of the seven classes in the simplest scheme for classifying stars accordingly to decreasing temperature and the appearance of their spectra.

[3] Planets with a mass between one and ten times that of Earth are called super-Earths. There are no such planets in our Solar System, but they appear to be very common around other stars. Discoveries of such planets in the habitable zones around their stars are very exciting because -- if the planet were rocky and had water, like Earth -- they could potentially be an abode of life.

[4] The astronomers used ten parsecs as their definition of "close." This corresponds to about 32.6 light-years.

[5] The name means that the planet is the second discovered (c) orbiting the third component (C) of the triple star system called Gliese 667. The bright stellar companions Gliese 667 A and B would be prominent in the skies of Gliese 667 Cc. The discovery of Gliese 667 Cc was independently announced by Guillem Anglada-Escude and colleagues in February 2012, roughly two months after the electronic preprint of the Bonfils et al. paper went online. This confirmation of the planets Gliese 667 Cb and Cc by Anglada-Escude and collaborators was largely based on HARPS observations and data processing of the European team that were made publicly available through the ESO archive.

Simulation explains why HIV cure is elusive

ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2012) ? New research from the University of Adelaide shows why the development of a cure and new treatments for HIV have been so difficult for scientists to crack.

Dr Jack da Silva from the University's School of Molecular & Biomedical Science has used computer simulations to discover that even in early infection when the virus population is low, HIV rapidly evolves to evade immune defenses and treatments.

These results -- published in this month's issue of the journal Genetics -- challenge the commonly held belief that evolution of the virus under these circumstances is very slow.

"I believe the search for a cure for AIDS has failed so far because we do not fully understand how HIV evolves," Dr da Silva said.

To make this discovery, Dr da Silva used computer simulations to determine whether, under realistic conditions, the virus could evolve rapidly if an infection started from a single virus.

This was done by constructing a model of the virus population, then simulating the killing of virus-infected cells by the immune system, along with mutation, recombination (the process by which genetic material is broken and joined to other genetic material), and random genetic changes.

Results show that for realistic rates of cell killing, mutation and recombination, and a realistic population size, the virus could evolve very rapidly even if the initial population size is one.

"At low population levels, viruses have reduced genetic variation and therefore it should be harder for them to evolve rapidly. However, it appears that the evolution of HIV goes against conventional wisdom," Dr da Silva said.

"We now need further insight into the precise genetic mechanisms that enable the virus to so readily adapt to all the challenges we throw at it. Such knowledge will, hopefully, lead to novel strategies for vaccines and other control measures."

Mark Johnston, Editor-in-Chief of Genetics, said: "Now that we know HIV rapidly evolves, even when its population size is small, we may be able to interfere with its ability to evolve so we can get the most out of the treatments that are developed."

Europe's space freighter launches

ATV-Edoardo Amaldi launched from French Guiana on an Ariane 5 rocket

Europe's ATV space truck has blasted off from the Kourou base in French Guiana.

The robotic truck is heading to the International Space Station (ISS) with new supplies of food, water, air, and fuel.

It is also carrying experiments and spares for the high-flying astronaut outpost.

The ship's Ariane 5 carrier rocket left the ground at 04:34 GMT, with the flight to orbit taking 63 minutes.

At 20 tonnes, the ATV is the biggest ship servicing the station now that the US shuttles have been retired.

The Ariane placed the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) at an altitude of about 260km. The freighter will use its own thrusters to climb a further 130km to the ISS over the course of the next few days.

"This is the start of a long journey; there will be other critical phases, especially the rendezvous [with the ISS] that will take place during the night of the 28th and 29th, Paris time," said European Space Agency (Esa) Director General Jean-Jacques Dordain.

Fair share

Ground controllers received confirmation half-an-hour after the truck had separated from Ariane's upper-stage that its solar panels had been deployed, and that the onboard power systems were working.

This ATV is the third such craft to be sent to the station by Esa, and has been dubbed Edoardo Amaldi in honour of the 20th Century Italian physicist (a co-discoverer of slow neutrons, which made possible nuclear power).

Two previous vehicles have been flown, in 2008 and 2011.

The trucks are part of the barter arrangement that Esa has with its international partners on the ISS project.

Instead of handing over cash to cover station running costs, Europe has taken on the major responsibility of platform logistics.

In return, it gets residency rights for its astronauts - one individual to spend six months in orbit, every couple of years.

The current flier, Dutchman Andre Kuipers, will be on hand at the ISS to help unload the truck when it arrives.

  • Max cargo capacity: 7.6 tonnes of dry and liquid supplies
  • Mass at launch: About 20 tonnes depending on cargo manifest
  • Dimensions: 10.3m long and 4.5m wide - the size of a large bus
  • Solar panels: Once unfolded, the solar wings span 22.3m
  • Engine power: 4x 490-Newton thrusters; and 28x 220N thrusters
  • Capability: The ship finds and docks with the ISS autonomously
  • No re-use: The vehicle is destroyed with ISS rubbish at mission end

The total cargo mass of ATV-Edoardo Amaldi - if you add in the fuel the ship uses for its in-orbit manoeuvres - is just over 6.5 tonnes.

This includes the largest ever load of dry cargo - everything from clothing and new toothbrushes to the Lego kits that astronauts use in the education demonstrations they beam to Earth.

Items with more significance than children's toys would be components for new scientific experiments and an American unit to recycle urine into drinking water.

ATV-Edoardo Amaldi will stay attached to the ISS until September. One of its key tasks over that period will be to push the station higher into the sky, to counteract the tendency of the platform to drift back to Earth as it drags through the residual atmosphere still present at its altitude.

"The ISS has a natural decay per day of 50-100m right now," explained Nico Dettmann, who runs Esa's ATV programme. "We plan nine re-boosts of the station in the course of the mission."

Europe will send two further freighters to the station, in 2013 and 2014.

These ships will fulfil Esa's commitments to the ISS partners through to about 2016.

Europe must then work out how to meet its "subscription" up to 2020, the current planned limit for operations on the orbiting platform.

One solution that has been suggested is that the ATV's service module (the part of the craft that drives it through space) be evolved into a tug that can carry the sophisticated manned capsule known as Orion, which the Americans are now developing to go beyond the space station, to destinations such as asteroids and Mars.

"There are different opportunities under consideration," said Michael Menking from Astrium, the pan-European space company that leads the production of ATVs from Bremen, Germany.

"ATV has a programmatic duty to pay the ISS operation obligation to the Americans. Therefore, it is very important that whatever we do as an evolution of ATV, it can be bartered with the Americans. And that means they have to agree to it," he told BBC News.

There is also an Esa study codenamed VAC, for Versatile Autonomous Concept, which is looking at the idea of a big spacecraft derived from the ATV that could do a variety of jobs in Low-Earth Orbit, such as docking with redundant satellites and pulling them out of the sky.

Esa is in the midst of some intense activity.

The past six months have seen it introduce two new rocket systems at its Kourou spaceport - a European version of the long-established Russian Soyuz rocket, which the agency plans to use to launch navigation satellites and scientific payloads; and the Vega rocket, which is an all new vehicle for lofting satellites that are really too small to go on either Soyuz or Ariane.

"The launch of Soyuz in October, the launch Vega in February, and the launch today of Ariane with ATV-Edoardo Amaldi - yes, it's been a fantastic six months. We are a significant space power. I can say that," said Mr Dordain.

Eric Prindle wins Bellator tournament title without a fight

Eric Prindle won Bellator's heavyweight tournament, which includes a $100,000 prize and a shot at Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad. Prindle did this without having to step in the cage for a rematch of his final with Thiago Santos.

How did this happen? In the latest of weird bumps in the road between the two competitors, Santos missed weight by 12 lbs. With Santos so far over the heavyweight limit of 265 lbs, the fight was called off, and Prindle was declared the winner of the tournament.

Last week, their fight was delayed after Prindle came down with the flu. In November, they met in the cage for their first attempt at a final. That bout was declared a no contest when Santos threw an illegal kick to Prindle's groin.

Prindle got to the final with a decision win over Abe Wagner and a 40-second knockout of Ron Sparks. He will now face Konrad at a later date to challenge for the Bellator heavyweight belt.

Model gives clues on how to optimize homogeneous feeding of cells in suspension from a liquid nutriments supply in a bioreactor

Physicists who have studied the mixing between two incompatible fluids have found that it is possible to control the undercurrents of one circulating fluid to optimise its exposure to the other. This work, which is about to be published in EPJ E, was performed by Jorge Peixinho from CNRS at Le Havre University, France, and his colleagues from the Benjamin Levich Institute, City University of New York, USA.

The authors compared quantitative experimental observations of a viscous fluid, similar to honey, with numerical simulations. They focused on a fluid, which partially filled the space between two concentric cylinders with the inner one rotating. This system was previously used to study roll coating and papermaking processes. To interpret this seemingly simple system, they factored in interface flows, film spreading, and the formation of free surface cusps - a phenomenon relevant to fluid mixing, but which is not quantitatively captured by conventional numerical calculation.

The authors observed the presence of several flow eddies, stemming from fluid flowing past the inner cylinder, causing it to swirl, and the appearance of reverse currents including one orbiting around the rotating cylinder and a second underneath. They made the second eddy disappear by increasing the fluid filling or its velocity. This is akin to turning a spoon full of honey fast enough to prevent it from draining.

This model is based on a highly viscous oil combined with air as a top fluid. When combined with a light oil containing nutriments as a top fluid, it could also apply to a suspension of bioreactor cells typically used to produce biotech medicines. Ultimately, it could help identify the right parameters and adequate mixing time scales to ensure that nutriments feed all the cells homogeneously without segregation.

Grand jury to hear case of Florida teen's shooting death

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Responding to an international petition, celebrity tweets, and spreading public outrage, the Justice Department opened an investigation on Monday into the shooting of a black teenager by a neighborhood watch captain who escaped arrest.

More than 435,000 people, many alerted by tweets from celebrities like movie director Spike Lee and musician Wyclef Jean, signed a petition on Change.org, a social action website, calling for the arrest of the shooter, George Zimmerman.

The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division and the FBI announced they have opened an investigation into the February 26 shooting in Florida of an unarmed 17-year-old, Trayvon Martin.

"The department will conduct a thorough and independent review of all of the evidence and take appropriate action at the conclusion of the investigation," the department said.

The campaign to draw attention to the case is the third largest in Change.org's history, and surpassed a petition of about 300,000 signatures credited last year with persuading Bank of America to drop plans for a $5 debit card fee, said Megan Lubin, a Change.org spokeswoman.

The victim's family lawyer, Ben Crump, said public pressure was behind an earlier promise by the Justice Department to review the case. And some Florida legislators are moving to consider a change in the law to prevent a recurrence.

"People all over the world, more than 400,000 people, said we demand you make an arrest. That's what is building pressure to look at it," Crump said.

The Justice Department said its investigation would examine the facts and circumstances of the shooting, and noted that with all federal civil rights crimes, the government must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a person acted intentionally.

"Negligence, recklessness, mistakes and accidents are not prosecutable under the federal criminal civil rights laws," the Justice Department said.

The shooting in a gated community in Sanford, Florida, when Zimmerman spotted Martin walking home from buying candy and iced tea at a convenience store.

Zimmerman, patrolling the neighborhood in his car, called the 911 emergency number and reported what he called "a real suspicious guy."

"This guy looks like he's up to no good, or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about," Zimmerman told dispatchers. "These assholes. They always get away."

The dispatcher, hearing heavy breathing on the phone, asked Zimmerman: "Are you following him?"

"Yeah," Zimmerman said.

"Okay, we don't need you to do that," the dispatcher responded.

But several neighbors subsequently called 911 to report a scuffle between Zimmerman and Martin. While some of the callers were still on the phone, cries for help followed by a gunshot can be heard in the background.

"I recognized that (voice) as my baby screaming for help before his life was taken," Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, told Reuters.

"STAND YOUR GROUND"

Police declined to arrest Zimmerman, and turned the case over to prosecutors, where it remains under review. Police cited Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, enacted in 2005 and now in effect in at least 16 other states.

Dubbed "Shoot first (ask questions later)" by opponents, the Florida law allows a potential crime victim who is "in fear of great bodily injury" to use deadly force in public places.

The landmark law expanded on legislation, known as the Castle Doctrine, that allowed use of deadly force in defense of "hearth and home." Passed under former Florida Governor Jeb Bush in 2005, it overturned a centuries-old doctrine that required the potential victim to retreat and avoid confrontation if possible, according to Ladd Everitt, spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, a Washington-based advocacy group.

"No one could argue that Zimmerman could not have safely retreated and avoided this conflict, and I think that is the critical element here and why these laws are so dangerous," Everitt said. "He (Zimmerman) does not have a duty to retreat in Florida."

Crump said Zimmerman should not be protected under the Stand Your Ground law. "It's illogical, you can claim self-defense after you chase and pursue somebody," he said. "That's a courtroom defense. That's not something the police accept on the side of the street."

Five years after Florida's Stand Your Ground law was enacted, a 2010 review by the St. Petersburg Times found that reports of justifiable homicides had tripled, and a majority of cases were excused by prosecutors or the courts. Meanwhile, the petition drive, started by a friend of Trayvon's mother, has been signed by people across the globe from Canada to Thailand, Lubin said.

Celebrity tweets over the weekend made #Trayvon a trending topic on Twitter, she said. Additional celebrities tweeting and posting on Facebook about the case include singers Clay Aiken and John Legend, filmmaker Michael Moore and actress Mia Farrow.

"This is a great moment for the entire nation to become educated in these Stand Your Ground laws," Everitt said. "It's unbelievably dangerous and really takes us to a situation where the rule of law is beginning to erode on our streets and vigilantism is being actively encouraged by these laws."

Travel insurance or assistance policies can save a lot of grief when ...

It seemed innocent at the time: a sightseeing ATV ride down a mountain in Moorea, an idyllic South Pacific island known for serenity and beauty.

But things quickly spiraled out of control for Edwin "Ned" Brockenbrough when he began to tumble, broke 12 ribs and suffered internal injuries.

The Seattle surgeon was evacuated to the best hospital in Papeete, the capital of Tahiti. But the medical staff didn't provide adequate care, which one doctor rationalized by saying Brockenbrough was "an old man."

"They weren't going to do anything," said Jean Brockenbrough, his wife.

The 79-year-old Brockenbrough, of Hunt's Point, Wash., needed a blood transfusion, fast. That's when his family set into motion coverage from a travel assistance policy he had bought separately from his vacation package.

"The company took it from there. They found all the help he needed to get home," Jean said. "They saved my husband's life."

The policy was through On Call International, which specializes in travel assistance insurance, rather than traditional travel interruption insurance.

The company representative knew whom to call to get assistance in Tahiti. The Tahiti connection got gurney-bound Brockenbrough out on the next Air Tahiti Nui flight to Los Angeles, accompanied by a doctor and nurse. From there he was transferred to Seattle by medical jet, then hospitalized for treatment.

Peace of mind policies

In case your travels go awry, consider these types of coverage. Purchases can be made through the websites:

Travel assistance: This goes beyond covering inconveniences by providing boots on the ground for emergency help. Providers include oncall international.com and globalrescue.com; other insurance providers can expand standard policies to offer this broader assistance coverage. Adventure sports: If you're doing something wild (such as "stilt walking" or "zorbing") your sport could be on a list of more than 100 that require special coverage. Providers include worldnomads.com and adventure advocates.com.

Prices: They vary widely, depending on length of travel and type of coverage. Expect to pay from $50 to $600. Weigh your risks, then decide.

The cost of the evacuation was more than $50,000, not a small sum but one the family could have paid. But it was the knowledge and connections the insurance company provided that were priceless, according to Jean Brockenbrough.

"The only question they asked us was whether, while riding on the ATV, he was engaged in a contest of speed," Jean said with a chuckle, recalling her conversation with the insurance company representative.

"We're a medical family. Our son is a surgeon too. We know how to navigate the medical care system pretty well, but not in a foreign country.

"It was a godsend to have this assistance."

When it comes to purchasing insurance or travel assistance, it's a decision left to the individual. Reputable travel agents will inform clients of the options, but a few hundred dollars tacked onto the cost of a pricey trip may not be something everyone wants to bear.

The theory behind insurance is to insure what you can't afford to lose. Still, many travelers choose to insure the wrong thing: the errant suitcase that doesn't show up at baggage claim, while forgetting to insure situations that could save a life, as was the case for the Brockenbroughs.

"The main thing with travel insurance is to know what is covered and what is not covered," said Marie Dodd, spokeswoman for the Portland office of the AAA, North America's largest travel agency. "There are a lot of different products out there. You need to read the fine print and trust your travel agent."

She said purchase of travel insurance is prevalent in Portland, "about 75 percent," for those who buy big-ticket cruise or tour packages through AAA. It is much less common, less than 20 percent, for those who make air, hotel and car reservations.

David Christopher of Happy Valley has led treks from Portland to the Himalayas for more than three decades. His Folkways Institute groups have rarely needed insurance, but occasionally someone does.

One man required a lifesaving evacuation from the Mount Everest area. He didn't have insurance, but his wife was happy to dip into their saving for the $5,000 helicopter flight.

While in Bhutan, one of Christopher's group broke an arm and asked for a helicopter evacuation. Since Bhutan does not use helicopters, the rescue flight had to be called from Nepal. Insurance covered the $30,000 tab.

Another expensive evacuation in Bhutan wound up the responsibility of the trekker because, though insurance was available, the insured did not obtain proper documentation before leaving the country.

Travel coverage usually comes in two forms: trip interruption insurance, or assistance insurance for emergencies that arise along the way. An individual's medical policy most likely has a limit on what is covered when something happens outside the United States, so supplemental insurance can offer additional protection.

Traditional travel insurance is often sold by an agent or on a website at the time of trip purchase. It may cover lost luggage, trip cancellation, costs due to delay, death or illness, and medical evacuation.

Travel assistance policies are often sold as an addition to a tour package, often bought directly from a company's website for single-trip or annual coverage. It may cover such items as medical emergencies and evacuation, prescription drug and dental emergencies, credit card replacement, delayed baggage tracking, language translation, legal assistance and, in case of death, return of remains.

Any policy should have 24-hour contact information, by phone or Internet, from anywhere in the world.

On Call International has thousands of clients who never make a claim, because most trips go as planned and incidents are rare. But accidents do happen and travelers do get sick.

A cruise ship passenger was evacuated at On Call's expense while in the Caribbean, flown to Florida for treatment, then home to Grants Pass (with medical escort) for recuperation. The company also paid when pneumonia required quick transport of the insured from Seattle back home to Phoenix.

"We're like AAA when you have trouble with your car," said Michael J. Kelly, president of On Call International. "You call, we come and get you. We even go to Cuba."

His company also helped evacuate 300 business executives, tourists and students from Egypt during last year's upheaval, something that is normally excluded from traditional travel insurance because it is classified as "political unrest."

One version, the 16GB model retailing for $499 will be available (in black or?white) for the early purchasers at Walmart.

"A limited supply of the new iPad will be available at your local 24-hour Walmart," a company representative said in an email to DailyTech.?"Other retailers? doors don?t open until 8 a.m. local time, so you can get to work on time and beat the rush by coming to Walmart."

Apple said this week its stores will open at 8 a.m. Friday, two hours earlier than normal, expecting a crush of iPad buyers.

Other retailers that will have the new iPad Friday include Best Buy, Target, Radio Shack and Sam's Club.
