Business Planning is Fun! No ? Really! DIYMarketers -Marketing ...

Post image for Business Planning is Fun! No ? Really!

I never thought these words would ever come out of my mouth but here they are ? Business planning is fun. ?Before you go checking to make sure I haven?t been taken over by mad marketing consultants, you?ll have to check out my latest find ? LivePlan. ?LivePlan comes to us from Palo Alto software any my friend and?colleague?Tim Berry. ?I have to reveal something here ? I owe a lot of my career and sanity to Tim and Palo Alto because they?ve made me look smart and capable for over 20 years with their business planning and marketing software. ?I still remember seeing, buying and receiving my first Palo Alto planning software that came on one of those 3.5 floppy disks and how excited I was about the clarity and structure that it would bring to my market planning project ? and it did.

I?m not going to get on a gushing spree here about why I like Palo Alto ? I?ll just say that what I like about their products is that they are always putting themselves in my shoes. ?They don?t delude themselves about the fact that small business owners look forward to business planning about as much as a root canal. ?Then they sit down and try to understand why that is so. ?Once they?ve uncovered the list of obstacles that we all face ? they get down to the business of overcoming them.

I?ve already purchased and own the Market Plan Pro product that Tim did with John Jantsch ? and it?s wonderful. ?But I digress. ?Let?s get back to what makes LivePlan make me actually enjoy business planning.

6 Reasons LivePlan Will Make You Actually Look Forward to Writing a Business Plan

We?ve all heard the statistics that say that the reason most small businesses fail is because they don?t have a plan. ?I also heard another statistic that said that the biggest predictor of?profitability?was having profit as a goal and then planning your business around reaching that goal. ?LivePlan can help you do all of these things. ?After experiencing the demo from the Palo Alto LivePlan team ? here are 6 things that jumped out at me that actually made me look forward to writing a business plan:

  1. It?s web-based.? I prefer web based products for a million reasons, the biggest is that it?s always accessible and always up to date. ?This is not true for LivePlan.\
  2. Collaborative.? Being a social creature with team members all over the globe ? I LOVE LOVE LOVE this feature. ?I mean, you don?t have to be the only one ?suffering? through the planning process. ?Get everyone involved and let them contribute their data, their content and their opinions on the plan. ?The best business planning process I?ve ever done was more of a game with teams than a planning process and LivePlan let?s you do just that.
  3. There?s an outline to follow.? The reason I bought my first Palo Alto product was for the outline. ?They didn?t complicate it ? they just laid it out. ?What makes LivePlan?s outline so nice is that it?s easily adjustable to meet your company or industry needs.
  4. You are guided.? MarketingPlanPro introduced this guided feature and LivePlan improved on it. ?Writing a business plan can be daunting and LivePlan holds your hand and walks you through it. ?Actually Tim Berry walks you through it using this terrific videos. ?So you can write your own copy using written examples as a guide and watch Tim?s video for support. ?I just love that.
  5. Amazing layouts the print beautifully.? I generally thing that forecasting is hard enough without having to create charts and tables. ?LivePlan gives you the ability to FOCUS on your forecast and leave the charts and table layouts to them. ?Just answer the questions and don?t worry about the rest.
  6. Tracks your progress. ?It?s called LivePlan for a reason ? because it?s ALIVE. ?The biggest reason businesses fail is because they fail to plan. ?Then if they DO plan ? they fail to follow the plan and report on their progress and then make changes when necessary. ?LivePlan avoids all this because it allows you to go inside the plan and then enter your actual results and then lets you compare those results with your planned forecast.

How much is it?

The LivePlan platform is really affordable ? I men it?s got enterprise function for a small business price ? $19.95/month for 2 users and 3 plans. ?Each user over the first two is an extra $9.95 per month for up to five additional users. ?After that, you can get a custom price from LivePlan. ? Another interesting twist is that it?s a month to month commitment AND if you decide to drop your plan or discontinue the service ? they will keep your data and store it until you?re ready to come back. ?This is a great feature and shows hoe much they?ve thought about the realities of small business life.

What?s missing?

There are a couple of small details that are still missing and in development; inserting pictures is one as well as adding hyperlinks. ?But these little tweaks are by no means show stoppers. ?None of these details are going to stop you from starting your business planning process today and being ready to launch a new plan for 2013.

Overall, I?d say the LivePlan is a terrific tool for small business and would encourage anyone to sign up and start planning their 2013 today.

PFT: Giants' confidence in Randle is growing

Divisional Playoffs - New Orleans Saints v San Francisco 49ersGetty Images

Recently, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported that, under the CBA, the NFLPA believes Saints quarterback Drew Brees will be entitled to a 44-percent raise in 2013, if the Saints use the franchise tag on him again.? But Brees has available to him a much more potent tactic, if he?s willing to walk away from $16.371 million in 2012.

Article 10, Section 15(c) of the labor deal explains that, if Brees doesn?t play in 2012, he can be tendered as a franchise player once again in 2013.? Though the language is a bit vague as to whether the franchise tender would equate to 120 percent of his 2011 salary or 120 percent of his 2012 tender (which is much higher), Section 15(c) contains a much more troubling provision, for the Saints.??? If Brees hold out for all of 2012, the Saints would be prevented from using the exclusive version of the franchise tag on Brees in 2013.

It gets better (or, from the Saints? perspective, worse).? If Brees never signs the 2012 franchise tender, the compensation in 2013 would drop to one first-round pick and one third-round pick.

While the Saints would have the right to match any offer sheet Brees signs elsewhere in 2013, a new team could put together a monstrous offer ? and then the Saints would have to decide whether to finally pay Brees or let him walk away.

The fact that neither the Brees camp nor the NFLPA have leaked this specific tidbit could mean that Brees has no real intention of sitting out the full season, contrary to reports that he won?t sign the one-year tender.? But if July 16 comes and goes without Brees signing a long-term deal and if he decides to exercise his right to not sign the one-year, $16.371 million tender, Brees? name could be added to the list of options for teams that need quarterbacks in 2013.

Intriguing (for now) possibilities include the Jets, who are always looking for a franchise quarterback, the Chiefs, the Raiders (yeah, G.M. Reggie McKenzie said he?s done trading draft picks, but coach Dennis Allen would be lobbying hard for Brees), the Eagles (this is Mike Vick?s make-or-break season in Philly), the Vikings (oh, the irony), the 49ers, and the Cardinals.

But then there?s the fact the Brees grew up in Texas.? Which could make the Texans and/or the Cowboys load the financial cannon in the hopes of bringing Drew home.

A lot of things have to happen before Brees would sit out the full season.? But circumstances will change as of July 16.? Given that Brees will have a shot at letting the market set his value in 2013 if he sits out for the full year, he could insist after July 16 on an agreement that the Saints won?t use the exclusive tender on him in 2013 ? or that they won?t use the franchise tender at all.

Play, eat, learn, live: Emerging Writers Festival Town Hall ...

"Advice that comes from a place of fear is never, ever correct." Christy Dena, Seven Enviable Lines session, Emerging Writers Festival Town Hall Conference, 26 May 2012

I went to the first day of the Town Hall Conference, part of the Emerging Writers Festival, today. I went expecting it to be interesting, but also expecting to be a spectator, in mind as well as voice. (Rather to my own surprise, I did end up asking one question - of Emily Maguire - and making one comment, in the Writing Groups discussion; so my voice was less silent than I'd anticipated, too). I was wrong - I got engaged, and I got jolted, in a good way, out of standing on the sidelines in my mind.

I have a rather large confidence problem when it comes to my writing, or at least my creative writing. I don't fear critique so much as complete rejection. Let me explain. I quite enjoy having a discerning and uncompromising eye on my work, picking it to smithereens. I take criticism (reasonably) well and am not usually stubborn beyond all reason about accepting the need for change. What I worry about is not that my work's imperfect, because, well, d'uh. I worry that it is, actually, unmitigated crap, with no redeeming virtues at all. That worry is what has held me back from submitting my manuscripts (there are three and a half of them now) to agents, publishers, or taking real steps towards self-publication. That worry is what makes me anxiously seek out "writer's guides" and "advice on writing and marketing" and then feel all confused and helpless when I read it, and realise I could never do the things or be the writer they all advise. That worry has held me back with my fiction writing all my life long - well, once I passed out of the grand hubris of my teens, wherein I merrily submitted stories and poems all over the place, and, moreover, got them published and won junior prizes for them.

I heard many wonderful writers speak today. Many of them were entirely new to me, and I have a long list of books to follow up (I brought home Romy Ash's Floundering, just to get me started - I'm heartily intrigued with the premise behind this, given how much I loved the similarly-based Room by Emma Donovan, another book about trauma from a child's-eye view). I learned things about the publishing process that I didn't know; I got some really useful tips on structure, process, and voice; and I felt I learned a lot from listening to these generous and articulate artists speak about their craft with a whole range of different foci. I laughed along with Lawrence Leung; I was moved by Sydney Smith and Ali Cobby Eckerman; I was absorbed in the wise words and warm personas of Anita Sethi and Emily Maguire. I found Paul Fearne, Fregmonto Stokes and Damon Young fascinating, and enjoyed the Writers Groups discussion with Dan Ducrou and Penni Russon very much.

But I will tell you the big takeaway of the day, the game-changing idea that will stay with me. It was introduced early on, by Christy Dena, and then echoed back, in different words, by many of the other speakers. It is this:

Don't let the fear of failure make your decisions about writing for you.

This applies in so many ways. It's about taking business-y, cautious advice because you're afraid of your own decisions and don't trust yourself. It's about not wanting to submit work because you're afraid of rejection. It's about censoring or suppressing your voice, and the story you want to tell, for fear of offending or annoying others.

I have been afraid. No, I am still afraid. In all these ways and more. I'm not short of ideas or the will to work at them. I'm not a non-completer or shy of the hard yards; I do finish written pieces, and I redraft and redraft and pick over their bones. I have been afraid to go beyond this, though. I am afraid to.

I think, though, that I will, all the same. Fear isn't much of a way to live a life, when all's said and done.

California chefs in a stew over foie gras ban

A simmering row between animal rights campaigners and a handful of California's top chefs is coming to the boil, ahead of a looming ban on foie gras in the western US state.

Protestors took their message to the streets this week as a series of high-end restaurants staged events -- with menus including foie gras ice cream -- to celebrate the gastronomic delicacy, made from force-fed ducks.

"Helpless ducks are force fed, eat somewhere else instead," chanted some 30 protestors outside the Michelin two-starred "Melisse" eatery in Santa Monica.

"We were out there being the voice for the ducks, who obviously don't have a voice," Amber Coon of the Animal Protection and Rescue League told AFP, saying famously liberal California is leading the way for other states.

California's foie gras ban comes into force July 1, and a group of chefs have formed the Coalition for Human and Ethical Farming Standards (CHEFS) to combat the perception they don't care how animals are treated.

Inside the "Melisse," owner and chef Josiah Citrin offered guests at the ticket-only event a mouth-watering six-course menu including foie gras -- French for fatty liver -- in every dish, from entrees to desserts.

Prepared by a team of eight top chefs, the $200-dollar-a-head meal included Pressed Foie Gras Terrine, Duck and Foie Gras Parfait, Foie Gras Tortelloni, and Pistachio Crusted Foie Gras.

There was also Maine Lobster with Foie Gras and Salsify, and Wild King Salmon prepared with Foie Gras, Bloomsdale Spinach, French Radish and Jus au Vin Rouge, while the Roasted Liberty Farms Duck came with Artisan Foie Gras.

For dessert there was Foie Gras Butter Kuchen with Local Cherries and Foie Gras Ice Cream.

Citrin is even selling T-shirts emblazoned with "Touche Pas a Mon Foie Gras" ("Keep Your Hands Off my Foie Gras"), with a picture of a duck in a little white chef's hat.

The event aimed to "raise money and awareness about this legislation, which single-handedly attacks foie gras but fails to address the lack of humane or ethical standards and treatment for other items in our food chain," he said.

"Our guests have been extremely supportive of our restaurant," he told AFP.

"All the ingredients that I try to use, that I use in my restaurant, I really work hard to find humanely-raised animals by farmers who really care about it," Citrin added.

The CHEFS lobby group presented a petition to lawmakers in Sacramento a few weeks ago, and at least four LA-area restaurants held events on Monday to highlight the cause.

But even more directly in the firing line is California's only farm producing the delicacy, the target of animal rights protests in various countries in recent years.

Artisan Sonoma Foie Gras Farm was founded more than 20 years ago by Guillermo and Junny Gonzalez from El Salvador who studied in France's Perigord region before establishing themselves in Sonoma, north of San Francisco.

They insist their production methods adhere to the highest standards, and are not cruel -- and that their family business was closing down as a result, with the loss of jobs and tax revenues for California.

"Our farm is being forced to shut down at the end of June, and the most unfortunate fact is that science has not been given a chance to play a role in this debate," Guillermo Gonzalez told AFP.

"The larger impact however, is that a powerful special interest group with an anti-meat agenda was able to impose its morals on us all," he added.

He cited a study published in the World's Poultry Science Journal in 2004, which he said concluded that "based on the extra physiological use of a natural fattening phenomenon, foie gras has been recognized as a non-pathological and non-harmful product."

"We do not believe that foie gras farming, when done correctly, is harmful or hurtful to a duck," he added.

The anti-foie gras protestors are not convinced, and showed photos and an iPad video to passers-by and diners arriving at the Santa Monica eatery, a few blocks back from the Pacific ocean.

"We were just letting them know that they can't get away with (presenting) foie gras in a humane sustainable farming practice," said Coon.

"Most of them tried to ignore us... they obviously knew that they were going to a fundraiser by a lobbyist to repeal an animal welfare law, so that's the type of crowd you're going to get anyway," she added.

She noted that the ban was agreed eight years ago, but enforcement was put off to allow the Sonoma farm and restaurateurs to prepare. Over 100 restaurants have removed foie gras from their menus, before the upcoming deadline.

"Obviously this is not a surprise to all these chefs who are suddenly whining about it... they're all of a sudden upset about it. But this has been in the works for years," she said.

"There's really just a few, very well connected wealthy hold-outs such as 'Melisse' who are making a big fuss about this," she said.

(AP) ? China's government on Friday rejected a U.S. antidumping ruling against its makers of solar power equipment and Chinese manufacturers warned possible higher tariffs might hurt efforts to promote clean energy.

The conflict has worsened U.S.-Chinese trade tensions. The two governments have pledged to cooperate in developing renewable energy but accuse each other of violating free-trade pledges by subsidizing their own manufacturers.

"The U.S. ruling is unfair, and the Chinese side expresses its extreme dissatisfaction," said a Commerce Ministry spokesman, Shen Danyang, in a statement.

Shen warned the ruling might harm clean energy cooperation but gave no indication how Beijing might respond. Some American companies that oppose the trade probe have warned China might retaliate against U.S. suppliers.

Thursday's preliminary ruling by the Commerce Department said Chinese producers sold solar cells and panels below fair price and hurt American producers. If that is upheld, tariffs averaging 31 percent could be imposed on Chinese solar-panel imports.

Three major Chinese manufacturers ? Yingli Green Energy Holdings Ltd., Suntech Power Holdings Co. and Trina Solar Ltd. ? rejected accusations they were selling goods at improperly low prices.

Foreign competitors complain Chinese manufacturers get improper government support in the form of low-cost access to land, bank loans and other resources. Beijing acknowledges giving research grants and tax breaks but says those are in line with its free-trade commitments and practices by other governments.

"We will challenge with data all of those assumptions," said Trina's chief commercial officer, Mark Kingsley. In an interview, he said China's subsidies are lower than those provided by Germany and some other countries.

Kingsley said Trina's exports to the United States are unlikely to be affected if Washington raises tariffs. He said any solar cells or other parts affected by the duties can be replaced by components from other countries.

"We already have developed third-country component supply that allows to ship as normal to the U.S.," he said.

Chinese producers also warned that higher U.S. tariffs might raise the cost of solar equipment and hamper efforts to promote renewable energy.

"Tariffs are disruptive and destructive for the entire solar industry," said Yingli's chairman, Miao Liangsheng, in a statement.

The Commerce Department launched its investigation in November following complaints by a group of U.S. producers led by Oregon-based SolarWorld Industries America Inc., a unit of Germany's SolarWorld AG.

The complaints were amplified by the bankruptcy of solar-panel maker Solyndra LLC after the California-based company received a $528 million U.S. government loan. Solyndra cited Chinese competition as one reason behind its failure.

Beijing responded by launching its own probe last November into whether U.S. government support for producers of wind, solar and other renewable energy technology is an improper trade barrier.

The dispute highlights tensions over whether China's heavily regulated economy should be treated as a free market. Beijing has pressed the United States and Europe to officially grant such status, which would make it harder to bring some dumping and other complaints, but none of its major trading partners has yet agreed.

With China treated as a non-market economy, U.S. regulators looked at other countries to decide what production costs for Chinese solar equipment manufacturers would be and estimate how much government support they received.

Shen, the Commerce Ministry spokesman, criticized that approach and said it resulted in an unfairly high comparison price.

"This is not consistent with China's development status, does not conform to the facts of China as a market economy and highlights the tendency of trade protectionism in the United States," Shen said.

Chinese solar equipment manufacturers warned earlier that sanctions could result in a loss of American jobs because U.S. companies are both buyers of Chinese products and suppliers of materials. They said Chinese manufacturers spend some $2 billion a year to buy materials such as polysilicon from U.S. suppliers.

Kingsley said Trina buys silicon from Michigan and manufacturing equipment from New Hampshire, plastic and glass from Japan and South Korea and other components from suppliers elsewhere in Asia.

"These products, by design, are incredibly international," he said. "The vast majority of this value chain is not in China."

7 Tips for How to Sell Books | Business 2 Community

I?ve been working on an updated series of mini eBooks on how to sell books that will address a wide variety of questions on the minds of self-publishers everywhere. In the process of writing, I?ve been developing a short list of the basics of selling books successfully as a self-publisher.

Here it is so far, in no particular order:

1. Let Go of Your Ego

Don?t make the mistake of assuming that your book is better than all of the rest out there ? especially if you?re brand new and have never hit a bestseller?s list in the past. Keep your ego in check and humbly push forward with your book marketing plan.

2. Learn Something about Marketing

Ideally you should learn ALL YOU CAN about marketing, but at the very least you should learn the basics. Start by learnHow to Sell Booksing about the four Ps of marketing. This is what they teach you in marketing 101 and it applies beautifully to selling books. See if your local community college has some inexpensive courses you can take to get more familiar with marketing and sales.

3. Revamp Your Book Cover

One of the first things I tell my clients when they ask me what they can do to sell more books is to redo your book cover. Many times the book cover is the one issue that is preventing people from clicking that ?buy? button and giving your book a try ? especially when it comes to online sales. Get a professional to work on you book cover.

4. Do a ?Price Check?

I cringe when I see a new self-publisher?s paperback novel priced at $20 for 160 pages. Many book buyers won?t even pay $20 for a 500 page book. Check the price tag on your book to see if you might be overcharging. Many brand new self-publishers are finding success with pricing their eBooks very low (99 cents to 2.99 per copy) as a way to get people interested in their work. Then they price their future or backlist titles higher.

5. Get Familiar with Social Media

If you?re not on social media, you need to be. While many social media sites are not a direct line to book sales, they help you build a community and interest around you and your books over time. At the minimum, join Twitter (for posting your blog posts and updates about goings on) and Facebook (to connect with book clubs, avid reader groups and other authors).

6. Take a Class in Sales or Public Speaking

If you?re not comfortable communicating with others, whether offline or online, take a class to teach you sales and public speaking techniques. These skills will become invaluable to you as you go forward with your book selling efforts, including attending book signings, doing interviews or even just talking to people on Twitter.

7. Seek Reviews

Reviews are solid gold when it comes to selling books, especially when you?re selling them online. People are social creatures?we listen to the opinions of others when making a decision on whether to buy something. Seek genuine reviews from your targeted readers early on in the book publishing process.

Real Estate Prices, Sales Tick Up Again in Canada

The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) reports that the country?s real estate sales and prices are edging up again, although experts are quick to note that seasonally adjusted rates are more or less flat. The 1% increase in transactions and marginal gain in prices must be viewed with Vancouver?s high-end sales activity in mind. This year?s sales in the city?s priciest neighborhoods did not match last year?s numbers and accounts for how the entire country?s numbers are skewed. CREA analysts report that sales in Vancouver and Toronto are so influential that netting them out across national sales can actually determine whether the market is seen as improving or in decline. For more on this continue reading the following article from Property Wire.

Residential property prices in Canada are continuing to edge upwards and activity is either up or steady in half of local markets, according to the latest data from the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA).

Nationally transactions were up just under 1% in April compared with the previous month and activity stood 11.5% above levels in April 2011.

But CREA said that she size of the year on year increase reflects a slowdown in sales last April following changes to mortgage rules which came into effect in March 2011.

The actual, not seasonally adjusted, national average price for homes sold in April 2012 was $375,810. While more or less flat compared to last spring on a national basis, average sale prices were up on a year on year basis in 80% of all local markets in April.

?It bears repeating that the national average price was skewed higher last spring by record level high end home sales in Vancouver?s priciest neighbourhoods, and that a replay of this phenomenon was not expected this year,? said Gregory Klump, CREA?s chief economist.

?Sales data confirm that high-end activity in Vancouver is well off the peak levels reached at this time last year, which is exerting a gravitational pull on the national average price. By contrast, activity in Toronto is stronger this spring than it was last spring. Higher priced sales activity there is on the rise and buoying average prices. As the most active housing market in Canada, Toronto is the biggest factor supporting national average price,? he explained.

?Netting Vancouver out of the national average price calculation yields a 4.9% year on year gain. Netting Toronto out of the national average price calculation, while leaving Vancouver in, produces a 2.2% year on year decline. Netting out both Vancouver and Toronto results in a 3.1% increase in average price. On balance, this points to modest price growth amid balanced market conditions in much of the rest of Canada,? he added.

Sales over MLS? Systems of real estate Boards and Associations in Canada edged up 0.8% from March to April 2012, putting them on par with levels reported in the same month two years earlier. The data also shows that the number of newly listed homes edged back 0.2% from March to April.

Activity was either up or held steady in half of all local markets in April, with Toronto and Calgary posting the biggest monthly increases for the second month in a row.

Activity gains in Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton, as well as London and St. Thomas also made significant contributions to the national sales increase in April. Increased activity in these markets offset monthly declines in Ottawa, Windsor-Essex, Quebec City, the Fraser Valley, and Vancouver.

?A number of Canadian housing market trends in April remained intact from the previous month. Trends in Vancouver and Toronto continue to diverge. These two housing markets have an obvious influence on national statistics and a high profile, but Canada is a big place. Trends in housing markets differ across Canada,? said Wayne Moen, CREA president.

A total of 157,804 homes have traded hands so far this year, up 6.4% from levels reported in the first four months of 2011 and about 4% above both the five and 10 year averages for sales during the first quarter of the year.

The number of newly listed homes was little changed in April compared to March, having edged back 0.2% on a month on month basis.

The national sales to new listings ratio, a measure of market balance, stood at 55.9% in April, up slightly from its March reading of 55.4%. Based on a sales to new listings ratio of between 40 to 60%, the number of local markets that were in balanced market territory in April at 59 was up slightly from March?s 56.

Nationally, the number of months of inventory stood at 5.6 months at the end of April, unchanged from levels reported in March. The number of months of inventory represents the number of months it would take to sell current inventories at the current rate of sales activity, and is a further measure of the balance between housing supply and demand.

Veronique Pittman: Third Graders Help Their School Win Green Cup Recycle Challenge

Pioneer Academy (PS 307Q), a Pre-K-4th grade school in Queens is the winner of the 2012 Green Cup RECYCLE Challenge, a national student-driven recycling competition for K-12 schools sponsored by the non-profit Green Schools Alliance (GSA).

Pioneer achieved "Recycling Champion" status by earning the highest score of any school -- 106 points -- and correctly sorting 96% of its recycling and trash bins. The school earned 10 "Bonus Points" for additional waste reduction efforts including paperless communications, purchasing recycled paper products and reusable water bottles, and participating in "Trayless Tuesdays."

During the four-week Challenge, which ended April 30th, schools competed for points by "recycling right" -- improving recycling compliance rates and decreasing contamination. Weekly bin checks provided instant feedback on how well schools were recycling.

"We checked 20 bins each week," says Jasmin Andujar, Pioneer Academy's science teacher and sustainability coordinator who managed the Challenge with help from her 3rd grade Green Team. Andujar credits the children for their hard work, and a documentary about plastic pollution as the reason for her increased commitment to greening.

After seeing Bag It at a professional development seminar last summer, Andujar became determined to improve less than stellar recycling practices at her school. "That movie made me realize I could do my part to teach children about protecting the Earth," she says. So, in October 2011, she started Pioneer's Green Team, instilling practices that prepared everyone for the Recycle Challenge, and which still continue today.

Aside from ensuring that each classroom had both garbage and recycling bins, and informing staff about recycling rules, Andujar trained her small army of enforcement agents. "Each week, the Green Team swept through the school and posted "Green Inspection Grades" on every classroom and office door," says Andujar. "G" for green, "M" for making progress, and "P" for polluting. According to Andujar, a lot of teachers received "Ps" and were quite embarrassed. "Within two to three weeks, we saw improvement," she says. Green Team members handed out recycling tips and signs. Andujar also met with custodial staff to see how she could help them. "The custodians said that students were mixing garbage with recycling; but now that we recycle, they're recycling too," she says. More importantly, Andujar says, winning the Recycle Challenge was a source of pride for the children, which showed them that the work they do every week pays off.

Another "Recycling Champion" was the Hopkins School, for grades 7-12, in New Haven, Connecticut. Hopkins received 101 points and had 91% of its bins properly sorted. The school -- which had just finished the Green Cup Energy Challenge in March -- earned 10 "Bonus Points" for an impressive array of "extras" that included trayless dining (to save water, napkins, and reduce food waste), use of 100% recycled paper, a battery collection drive, and an aggressive recycling program that has reduced the number of trash pickups from five to three per week.

Because Hopkins already had high recycling compliance rates, the school's Sustainability Committee (SusCom), composed of faculty and two dozen students, had to step it up a notch for the Recycle Challenge. They made announcements at school-wide assemblies, hung posters, sent mass emails and published reminders.

"We had students and three faculty members checking about 30 bins each week, close to 50% of the bins in the school," says Priscilla Kellert, History Department Chair and SusCom faculty head. Sarah Wagner, a Hopkins Junior, is one of SusCom's most active student leaders. "The bin checks allowed us to see if students were recycling on their own," says Wagner. "It was nice to see that they were really participating and taking recycling seriously."

Last year, Hopkins switched to single-stream recycling. Instead of having one bin for paper, one for glass, metal and plastic, everything is thrown into one bin, which, Wagner says, makes recycling much easier. "SusCom has increased the number of recycling bins on campus," she says. There are bins in major gathering places, blue bins in every classroom, and six new outdoor recycling bins, purchased with PTA monies, that have been strategically placed around the campus, including on the athletic field. The group's signage committee places signs above every recycling bin, explaining what can and can't be recycled. Trash and recycling bins are always placed next to each other.

"The thing about recycling is, you're trying to address peoples' behavior, so it has to be easy and convenient until it becomes second nature," says Kellert. "It takes a lot of gentle reminders; you need to set a good tone and be persistent."

Wagner says that students have told her how much they appreciate SusCom's campus greening efforts, and being a top school in the Recycle Challenge was rewarding. "Helping the environment is really important to me. It's nice to be recognized and it makes you want to continue to do a great job," she says.

In addition to Pioneer and Hopkins, four other schools achieved the level of "Recycling Champion" by earning 90 points or more: Hewitt School in New York, NY (96 points), Maret School in Washington, DC (94 points), Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT (90 points), and Millbrook School in Millbrook, NY (90 points).

Coca-Cola's History of Product Placement

Oh, product placement -- what would we do without you wagging product in our face while we're trying to pay attention to an important plot twist? One of the most notorious for product placement over the years has been Coca-Cola, who've managed to fit their beverage into what feels like every other movie ever made. But just how many movies has Coca-Cola taken part in, and which one was the first??

Here's a terrific infographic from AnyClip, which details the history of Coca-Cola product placement in the movies, beginning as far back as 1933 when the first piece of Coca-Cola product placement was used on a King Kong billboard in Times Square. There are some pretty cool facts on this thing, like the first use of Coca-Cola as a plot point in a movie, or the first appearance of Diet Coke in a film (1989, When Harry Met Sally).?

Unleash the Hounds

Toobin?s reporting, based upon unnamed sources, tells a different story: That spring, the court?s conservative majority of five was ready to overturn the earlier cases upholding limits on corporate money in elections. In response, he reports, ?Souter wrote a dissent that aired some of the Court?s dirty laundry. By definition, dissents challenge the legal conclusions of the majority, but Souter accused the Chief Justice of violating the Court?s own procedures to engineer the result he wanted.? Toobin doesn?t give details, but one point Souter was likely making was that the court was violating its rule against deciding issues the parties didn't raise and the court didn't ask them to address. Roberts, worried that Souter?s ?bridge-burning farewell? would ?damage the Court?s credibility,? maneuvered to have the case rebriefed and reargued the following term, which would remove the objection that the conservative majority was sandbagging the moderate-liberal minority.
