Health and Fitness Talk ? Febrile Seizures

by Kimberly Allen, RN

Febrile seizures are convulsions that occur in conjunction with a?sudden rise in body temperatur.? Febrile seizures are fairly common?occurring in 1 out of every 25 children and they occur in both boys??and girls.? Almost all febrile seizures occur in children between 6?month and 5 years, though it is rare for them to occur after 3 years?of age.? Febrile seizures can also run in families.? For example,?there are four children in my family and all four of us had febrile?seizures.

Usually febrile seizures occur in resposne to a sudden spike in your?child?s body temperature.? The seizures generally only occur on the?first day of the fever in response to the sudden change.? Most of the?time fevers that trigger a seizure are in response to either a?bacterial or viral infection, however not always.? My youngest sister?would have febrile seizures in response to sudden spikes in her body?temperature that were as high as 106.8F.? She was hospitalized several?times, not for the seizures, but for the high temperatures.? She would?only have the seizure on the first day, but the fever would last for?several? days.? And the Drs were never able to find a cause for the?fever, she was always diagnosed with a high fever of unknown origin.

Then my son had high fevers, up to 104.8F but with hives and the Drs?could not find a cause and he was diagnosed with high fever with hives?of unknow origin.? These diagnosis? of unknown origin were made only?after extensive testing to determine a cause so always have your child?examined by your Dr if he/she develops a?febrile seizure?because there?are many conditions that can cause sudden temperature spikes leading?to seizures including meningitis and encephalitis, it?s immportant to?note that both of these conditions can cause seizures without a fever.
Researchers have also identified several genes associated with?febrile seizures though how the genes affect febrile seizures?continues to be studied.

There are two types of febrile seizures, simple and complex seizures.?Simple febrile seizures are the most common and are considered less?serious than the complex febrile seizures.? Simple febrile seizures?last less than 15min, they generally involve the entire body and do?not occur more than once in a 24 hour period.? Complex febrile?seizures are less common and are considered the more serious of the?two. ?These seizures will last longer than 15 minutes and they usually?occur repeatedly during the first 24 hours and/or affects only one?side of your chuilds body.

If your child experiences a febrile seizure it?s important to contact?your childs Dr immediately after the seizure.? If your child is?vomiting, complaining of a stiffneck or is severely lethargic or
having difficulty breathing call 911 and take your child to the local?emergency room.?While your child is having a febrile seizure place him/her in a safe?place where they can?t ffall or hit something and injure himself.?Always place your chikld on their side to prevent them from choking?and watch or any change in the color of your childs face and breathing?problems.? Should your childs seizure last longer than 15 minutes or?he/she turns blue call 911 immediately do not wait for the seizure to?end.? It?s also important to understand the things you should not do
during a seizure.? First do not attempt to restrain or hold your child?or attempt to put anything in his/her mouth, and do not put your child?into a cool or luke warm bath to try to bring down the temperature.? I?do realize that these things were common practice in the past but?research has indicated they cause more harm than good.? Also you do?not want to try to give any medications as it increases the potential?for your child to choke.

Most febrile seizures are harmless and resove on their own, however?they are frequently an indication that something else is going on that?may or may not need to be treated.

Garber says Beckham 'overdelivered' to MLS

By RONALD BLUM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:57 a.m. ET Nov. 27, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) -David Beckham did everything Major League Soccer asked of him to grow football in the United States during his 5 1/2 seasons with the Los Angeles Galaxy, league commissioner Don Garber said on Monday.

Beckham plays his final competitive match for the Galaxy on Saturday in the MLS Cup final against Houston.

When Beckham left Real Madrid in 2007 to sign a $32.5 million, five-year deal with the Galaxy, he said he wanted to win and increase the league's popularity both domestically and abroad. The Galaxy won last year's title and are in the final for the third time in four years.

"I don't think anybody would doubt that he has overdelivered on every one of those measures," Garber said during a telephone conference call, his annual state of the league session as commissioner. "There's arguably not a soccer fan on this planet that doesn't know the LA Galaxy and Major League Soccer, and David played a significant role in helping us make that happen. He was an unbelievable ambassador for the league, for the Galaxy."

The league's regular season attendance average increased from 15,504 in 2006 to 17,872 in 2011 and a record 18,807 this year. After Beckham's arrival, the league announced expansion teams that started play in San Jose (2008), Seattle (2009), Philadelphia (2010), Vancouver and Portland (2011), and Montreal (2012), increasing the total to 19.

Ground was also broken for football-specific stadiums in Houston, Kansas City and Philadelphia, the long-delayed venue in New Jersey was completed, and extensive renovations took place in Montreal, Portland and Vancouver. Television exposure improved, but only slightly.

"We needed David Beckham in 2007 to help drive our credibility, to help grow our popularity and to show the world really that the United States ... was ready to support a division-one league," Garber said. "We don't need anything today to get us to the next level. It's a wide variety of initiatives, from player development, from continued investment in our overall player pool, to better and more focused marketing, to smart expansion to a transformation into a digital world where our games are even more available than they are today."

Thierry Henry, Rafa Marquez, Robbie Keane and Tim Cahill have followed Beckham to MLS. Given a chance to leave, Beckham stayed for 2013 in a deal that guaranteed him another $4 million. The 37-year-old former England captain said last week he was departing "to experience one last challenge."

"I don't believe we're going to be hurting when David leaves," Garber said. "The Michael Jordans and Wayne Gretzkys of the world, the Magic Johnsons, they have a great impact on taking a league to a higher level. And then if managed properly, the league and the clubs and the players that are still in the league are able to take that mantle and take it even higher."

Beckham's deal included the right to buy a future expansion team at a discounted price. Garber said only the New York market was excluded.

Denver-based Anschutz Co. said in September it was starting a process to sell its Anschutz Entertainment Group subsidiary, which owns the Galaxy and several other sports properties.

"There is a possibility for him to work with the league office to find ways to transfer, I guess, that option into an opportunity in LA," Garber said. "Way too premature to talk about that or even speculate about what that would look like, but that opportunity does exist if it meets the approval of the league, who in essence holds that value; David, who holds the option; and the Los Angeles Galaxy, who would have to be part of that discussion."

Analysis: Stifel CEO puts reputation on line with KBW buy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Over the past seven years, Stifel Financial Corp Chief Executive Ronald Kruszewski has impressed Wall Street with a series of acquisitions that quintupled the regional brokerage's revenue and rewarded shareholders with a nearly four-fold increase in returns over the last five years.

Still, some investors view Kruszewski's latest deal, to buy money-losing investment bank KBW Inc , as a much riskier proposition. Some question the wisdom of spending $575 million to build out a middle-market investment banking business at a time when tougher financial regulations are posing a threat to profits of giants such as UBS AG and Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

Moreover, after years of expansion, Stifel's board is starting to worry that Kruszewski may be overextended. Before announcing the KBW deal on November 5, the board was mulling whether to appoint a senior administrator or president to help him run the company, according to one director. Kruszewski is currently chairman and president, as well as chief executive.

"We talk about him moving too fast, and whether we have the infrastructure to move as fast as we're moving," said Robert Lefton, a psychologist who has been on Stifel's board for 20 years.

But he stressed that the board supported the KBW deal and was very happy with Kruszewski, who has been CEO for 12 years and is Stifel's largest individual shareholder with a 1.6 percent stake worth more than $26 million.

"He has a very clear sense of where he's heading," Lefton said. "When he came aboard, we were a struggling little regional firm barely eking out a living. He has put together what he told us he would."

Another board member echoed Lefton's comments. "Even if there is a modest recovery, (KBW) will be a very smart acquisition because he bought it off the bottom," said Robert Grady, a Stifel director and former Carlyle Group partner. "I wouldn't bet against him."

Kruszewski, 53, has said he wants to better balance revenue between the St. Louis-based company's retail and institutional brokerages. The deal to buy KBW, which specializes in advising small banks and thrifts on mergers and capital-raising, takes him closer to that goal.

If he succeeds, Stifel will be able to compete with Jefferies Group Inc - whose market value is twice Stifel's $1.6 billion - to raise money for companies with revenue of $100 million to $1 billion. Big banks like Goldman and Morgan Stanley largely ignore this middle-market segment.

Unlike Kruszewski's previous acquisitions, KBW brings complex integration issues. Stifel already has dozens of bankers, analysts and salespeople serving financial companies, so employees are worried that the merger could bring job cuts.

"He is already pretty exposed to the institutional securities business, and ... financial services is not a great business right now," said Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Douglas Sipkin. "He is a very smart guy, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me."

In addition, money managers who trade through both Stifel and KBW do not want to pay twice for research and other products, so parsing the benefits of the merger becomes difficult.

"To distinguish between the two from Stifel's business perspective is going to be tricky," said Mark Kuzminskas, director of equity trading at Robeco Investment Management.

In an interview, Kruszewski defended the KBW deal, and said it and the 2010 purchase of Thomas Weisel Partners, which specializes in banking for technology companies, are core components of his middle-market corporate strategy.

"I'm not predicting that next year is going to be a blowout year for financial companies, but I'm not being reckless," he said. "Institutional (brokerage) is much more cyclical and, of course, you take a lot more risk. It is also a high profit-margin business when things are working."

Investors do not appear to be convinced. At Monday's close, Stifel shares had declined 2.9 percent this year, compared with an uptick of 1.1 percent for the NYSE Arca Securities Broker/Dealer Index.

CRAFTY NEGOTIATOR

Kruszewski, the son of a fireman from South Bend, Indiana, has an accounting degree and, according to people who have worked with him, a steel-trap mind for absorbing new data and translating it into action.

He demonstrated discipline earlier this year, passing on the acquisition of Morgan Keegan from Regions Financial Corp because the price was too high, Lefton said. Raymond James Financial Inc later purchased the Tennessee-based brokerage.

"At the beginning of every year, I have no idea what we'll do," Kruszewski said. "Strategic planning is for people who have too much time on their hands. Our plan is to be in a position to take advantage of opportunities."

KBW was one such opportunity. The company had lost more than $60 million since the financial crisis of 2008 and was cutting 15 percent of staff. It was also weighing radical changes in its operations after another down year for financial services deals and capital-raising, a person close to KBW said.

Kruszewski drove a hard bargain. He required about 95 key employees to waive change-of-control clauses that would have let them sell their shares, and he compelled them to sign noncompete agreements. He also won control of $250 million of cash on KBW's balance sheet to help finance the cash-and-stock transaction.

You never want to negotiate against that man," said Scott McCuaig, the retired president of Stifel Nicolaus, the company's principal brokerage subsidiary. "He gets his hands dirty and works deals until they come to fruition. Nobody is going to snooker him."

Willpower Your Way To A Successful Career - Outshine Consulting

Post image for Willpower Your Way To A Successful Career

There?s no denying the benefits of willpower, but most of us have struggled at one time or another to maintain it long enough to reach our most important goals, and that?s probably because we?ve tried to use it in the wrong way.? If you want to get ahead in your career, or willpower your way to success, here?s how to leverage one of the most valuable tools available to you?

Here?s How To Use It?

There?s no substitute for willpower, despite what the commercials say!? We all know that ?fast and easy? diet pills aren?t the solution to a healthy lifestyle, but it?s a lack of buyers willpower that helps those products become successful.

The problem with willpower is that it provides a quick boost of motivation, which can burn out quickly, and if you don?t know how to use that burst in the best way possible then your level of self-discipline can fall by the wayside very quickly.

Given that willpower is typically a thrust forward, rather than a steady pace, it?s important not to tackle your goals and challenges in a way that requires a high level of willpower everyday because frankly, it?s unsustainable.? Success breeds success so you need a strategy that you can keep up to maintain momentum.

Willpower is great for setting the scene on how to move forward to achieve your goals, and then using that initial thrust of motivation to get moving.? So for example, if you want to change career, the first thing you need to do is to identify all the steps required to make that transition including what career you want to move in to, and then what skills you need to develop in order to make that move.

You might also feel tempted to stay in the ?same old job? because of your financial situation for example, so it would be wise to put together a budget to get your finances in order.? It might also be important for you to set aside time each weekend to study and up-skill,? and to join relevant associations and groups to expand your network in the industry you?re interested in.? You? could also get a Coach or Mentor so that you can learn more about career change, and you might also meet with several recruiters to get their expert advice on how to break into that particular industry.

As you can see, there are lots of different elements involved in achieving this goal, and all of this information would go into a written plan on how to change career.? Then it?s time for action ? and fast!? With focus, you could put a lot of these tasks into action in one day, and by the end of the day you will have used your willpower not to change jobs, but to put into place the conditions you need to make a career change easier.

The key point here is not to use willpower to make the actual change, but to attack your environment in order to set yourself up for that change.? The same goes for setting up a business, working towards a promotion, losing weight and so on ? if you leverage willpower in this way it will make it much easier for you to achieve your goals as you?ll create momentum and build positive habits to help you achieve success.? And remember, once a habit is formed you don?t need much willpower to keep moving forward, which means you?ll find it easier and easier to achieve the things that are most important to you.? The knock-on effect is huge!

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- The key to motivation in physical activity may be feeling inadequate. One Kansas State University researcher found that those who exercised with a teammate whom they perceived to be better increased their workout time and intensity by as much as 200 percent.

Brandon Irwin, assistant professor of kinesiology, was the principle investigator in a study that tested whether individuals engage in more intense physical activity when alone, with a virtual partner or competing against a teammate.

"People like to exercise with others and make it a social activity," Irwin said. "We found that when you're performing with someone who you perceive as a little better than you, you tend to give more effort than you normally would alone."

For the first part of the study, college-age females exercise on a stationary bike six sessions in a four-week period. They told participants to ride the bike as long as they could. On average, each participant rode for 10 minutes.

Next, the same group of participants returned to the lab for more exercise sessions, but was told they were working out with a partner in another lab whom they could see on a screen. In reality, this was only a looped video. Participants also were told that their virtual partner was part of the first study and had ridden the bike approximately 40 percent longer than them.

"We created the impression that the virtual partner was a little better than the participant," Irwin said. "That's all they knew about their partner. In this group, participants rode an average of nine minutes longer than simply exercising alone."

While this 90 percent increase was promising, Irwin said he and his team had a hunch that the motivation could go even further. The participants were invited back to the lab for more exercise sessions with a virtual partner. This time, though, they were told they were on a team with their partner.

"We told them they were working together to achieve a team score," Irwin said. "The team score was the time of the person who quits first. The participants believed that in the previous trial, they didn't exercise as long as the other person. We created a situation where the participant was the weak link."

Participants in this team trial exercised approximately two minutes longer than simply working out alongside someone. However, Irwin added that the results look different over time.

"This was an average, but over time the difference got much bigger," he said. "In the beginning, the participants were exercising about a minute longer than the partner group. By the last session, participants in the team group were exercising almost 160 percent longer than those in the partner group, and nearly 200 percent longer than those exercising as individuals."

Irwin said this might be because those who believed they were exercising with a partner built a rapport over time and didn't want to let the partner down. He said the team was initially surprised at the drastic increase over time in participants working out with a teammate.

"If they're constantly working out with someone who's beating them, we wondered how motivated people would be to keep coming back and getting beat again," Irwin said. "It turned out to be exactly the opposite. Over time, it can be very motivating, as long as the conditions are right."

Irwin said research has shown that if an exercise partner or teammate is roughly at the same level or is exponentially better, the motivation disappears. He and his team found that a partner who worked at a level approximately 40 percent better was optimal.

"In certain fitness goals, like preparing to run a marathon, consider exercising not only with someone else, but with someone who is that much better," Irwin said. "For an extra boost, consider some type of team exercise that involves competition, like playing basketball at a regular time throughout the week."

In the future, Irwin wants to continue using virtual partners to increase the time and intensity of physical activity, but he hopes to move beyond false partners.

"I want to partner people up with actual individuals, not just prerecorded workout partners," he said. "Similar to matchmaking software for romantic relationships online, individuals from different sides of the country could be matched up based on their fitness goals and levels. Using technology, you could run with someone using your smartphones."

Irwin is currently researching this option and hopes to bring it to fruition within the next several years.

orpitasingh: Horse Racing History | recreation and sports blog updates

The sport of horse racing goes back a long, long way. It goes back to circa 4,500 BC when nomadic Central Asian tribes domesticated horses for the first time. Ever after, horse-racing has reigned supreme as a sport fit for Kings.

From the beginning of recorded history, horse racing has been depicted as an organised and popular sport common to all of the world's major civilizations. The Olympic Games of ancient Greece featured events involving both mounted and chariot racing. The sport was then taken up by the Romans. Mounted and chariot horse racing became major areas of enterprise in Roman Empire days; these events were the product of breeding programs with imported bloodlines and extensive training programs. Horseracing had all elements of legalized betting like bookies, proper racing tracks, hit tips, scandals and, red hot entertainment and excitement. Horse racing saw a decline that coincided with the Roman Empire's decline. It began to pick up speed once more once mankind was well into a more modern era.

Horse racing took a professional turn as long ago as the twelfth century, when English Crusader knights came back in the company of Arab horses. This set off a trend that lasted for the forthcoming period of hundreds of years: more and more Arab stallions were imported for crossing with English mares. The ensuing offspring were a real mix of speed and endurance. These cross bred horses were the forefathers of today's horse racing breeds.

As quantum technological jumps in transport and other fields of human concern took place in the 19th century and later , thousands of people became hooked on watching horse races and gambling on racing horses. Horseracing started to get intensive coverage in distinguished newspapers, and gambling volumes consistently increased. The arrival of organised on-site bookmakers brought along a complete sea change. Random and sometimes illegal, sometimes unethical practices led to a moderately successful Jockey Club effort to establish really high standards of order, discipline and integrity that ensured the sport's continued well being.

All around the world, attendance at race courses has been shooting up right into the early part of this century. There had been a decline in attendance during the 1970s and 1980s. The technology wonder of online web wagering has influenced horse racing in ways never conceived of earlier. Online betting has drawn a completely new generation of spectators and betters to the Game of Kings; they prefer to conduct all of their activities in front of their computers and TV sets. The facility to bet and earn cash legally from the result of horse races has been a core part of this sport's appeal and a major factor behind its survival as a sport with a presence.

Shoppers hit the stores on Black Friday

15 hrs.

Hordes of shoppers descended on stores across the country in the ritual known as Black Friday after many major retailers moved their openings into Thanksgiving night.

In Santa Monica, Calif., about five people were injured at an Urban Outfitters store shortly after midnight?after shoppers smashed a tall glass door, the Los Angeles Times reported. In Tallahassee, Fla., police told WCTV?that two people were shot outside the local Wal-Mart, but their injuries were reported to be non-life?threatening.

The world's largest retailer?reported?its best ever Black Friday events after opening at?8 p.m. on Thanksgiving.?During the high-traffic period from 8 p.m. through midnight, Wal-Mart processed nearly 10 million register transactions and almost 5,000 items per second.?

"The early read is Wal-Mart?s been one of the clear winners," said?R. J. Hottovy, a senior retail analyst at?Morningstar. The combination of expanded hours, aggressive pricing and guaranteed availability of some doorbuster deals are likely to pay off for the nation?s largest retailer."

At a Walmart in Moultrie, Ga., an online?video showed a large crowd of people pushing, yelling and grabbing boxes off a shelf during a Black Friday promotion.

Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove says a deal on a cell phone with a prepaid, unlimited usage plan "led to excitement among our customers." He called the incident unfortunate, but said it was isolated.

He says staff and security were on hand at the store to handle the situation and that no injuries were reported.?

Cops: Bargain-hunter took home TV, left tot

In southeast Los Angeles County, authorities arrested a small group of protesters at a Black Friday demonstration outside a Walmart store?

Elizabeth Brennan of Warehouse Workers United says nine people, including three Walmart employees, were arrested shortly after noon Friday for blocking the street outside the store in Paramount, Calif.

Wal-Mart was the target of?a broad?campaign against the company's treatment of workers that is being waged by a union-backed group called OUR Walmart, which includes former and current workers.?

Related: Black Friday shoppers pass Walmart picket

Dan Schlademan, director of Making Change at Walmart, said ?hundreds and hundreds? of Walmart workers either walked off the job Friday?or didn?t come in for a scheduled shift.?

Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar disputed that, saying that the number of workers who missed shifts today was significantly lower than last year on Black Friday.

?We are aware of a few dozen protests at our stores today,? Tovar said, calling the activists? claim of activity at 1,000 stores ?grossly exaggerated.?

Tovar said that the discounter learned from shoppers that they want to start shopping right after Thanksgiving dinner. Then, they want to have time to go to bed before they wake up to head back out to the stores.

Still, Tovar said that Wal-Mart works to accommodate its workers' requests for different working hours. "We spent a lot of time talking to them, trying to figure out when would be the best time for our events," he said.

?Early bird does get the worm?
The early read from retail analysts is that Friday morning traffic was steady, but less hectic than previous years. ?Black Friday... kind of migrated to where much of the action was last night,? said Budd Bugatch, an analyst with Raymond James & Associates. ?Associates said it was wall-to-wall people last night.?

?The early bird does get the worm here. Target is more aggressive than they were a year ago,? said Patrick McKeever, senior equity analyst at MKM Partners LLC. ?Kohl?s looked good at midnight... it was just bumper-to-bumper people.?

National Retail Federation president and CEO Matthew Shay told CNBC that more than 147 million people were expected to go shopping this weekend.

?Looks like we?re off to a great start,? Shay said.

It?s likely that the combination of earlier openings and guaranteed availability of some door-busters helped space out traffic. Bugatch said a handful of stores he visited Friday morning had enough time to reorganize and tidy up their displays.

The question for stores is whether last night?s early surge will sustain its momentum through the weekend.

?I think there was probably a very modest net positive impact for brick and mortar sales versus last year, but the majority of what we?ve seen this year is just a shift,? said McKeever. ?There?s less of a Black Friday frenzy today than last year. It?s becoming more like Black Thursday night... Today?s going to be a significantly quieter day.?

'I only shop for sales'
At the Mall of America, outside Minneapolis, shoppers thronged the stores to load up on goods early Friday but the situation was under control, NBC News? Jay Gray reported.

Stores typically open in the wee hours of the morning on the day after Thanksgiving, named Black Friday because it is traditionally when they turn a profit for the year. However, these days, most retailers must be profitable year round.

But this year, stores such as Target and Toys R Us opened as early as Thanksgiving evening. About 11,000 shoppers were in lines wrapped around Macy's flagship store in New York City's Herald Square when it opened Thursday night.

Slideshow: Americans line up for Black Friday

Joan Riedewald, a private aide for the elderly, and her four children ages 6?to 18, were among them. By the time they showed up at the department store, Riedewalde had already spent about $100 at Toys R Us and planned to spend another $500 at Macy's before heading to Old Navy.

"I only shop for sales," she said.

A few hours later at about 3:30 a.m. ET at a nearby Toys R Us in New York's Times Square, the scene was a bit calmer.

Elizabeth Garcia, 17, a sales rep from the city's Bronx borough, was shopping for toys for her three children ages three, five and seven. She said she specifically decided on the later shopping start to avoid the crowds on Thanksgiving. She believes that was the best decision: Last year, she almost got into a fight over a Tinker Bell couch. But this year was much calmer.

"This year I wasn't about to kill people," Garcia said.

Adding convenience
The earlier hours are an effort by stores to make shopping as convenient as possible for Americans, who they fear will not spend freely during the two-month holiday season in November and December because of economic uncertainty.

At the same time, Americans have grown more comfortable shopping on websites that offer cheap prices and the convenience of being able to buy something from smartphones, laptops and tablet computers just about anywhere.

Avoid early bird remorse: 10 Black Friday gadget do's and dont's

That has put added pressure on brick-and-mortar stores, which can make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue during the holiday shopping season, to give consumers a compelling reason to leave their homes.

In addition to expanding their hours, many retailers also are offering free layaways and shipping, matching the cheaper prices of online rivals and updating their mobile shopping apps with more information.

From turkey to the stores
Some holiday shoppers seemed to find stores' earlier hours appealing.

"I ate my turkey dinner and came right here," said Rasheed Ali, a 23-year-old student in New York City who bought a 50-inch Westinghouse TV for $349 and a Singer sewing machine for $50 at a Target in New York City's East Harlem neighborhood that opened at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving. "Then I'm going home and eating more."

Not everybody was happy with Black Friday starting earlier.

Mike Labounty, 34, Lyndonville, Vt., was shopping on Thursday night for 32-inch Emerson televisions and other items on sale at the Walmart in Littleton, N.H., with his partner, Darcy Mitchell.

"I think it should go back to Friday," he said. "It breaks up families. Just look at us -- our kids are with their grandparents and they should be with us on Thanksgiving, but we're here getting them a TV."

NBC News contributor Martha C. White, Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Housing May Be Stable, but Not in 'Full-Blown ... - Yahoo! Finance

Housing has been trying to show a few reasons here and there to suggest the sector's worst days are behind it, but you still won't necessarily find a lot of uber-bulls out there.

Now, several stocks in the group have had good runs in 2012, led by PulteGroup (PHM), the best performer on the S&P 500 with a gain of 165.5% since the start of the year. Lennar (LEN) has been another star, climbing 93.9% and coming in at No. 5 on the list, FactSet data show.

RELATED: House Prices Are Nowhere Near a Bottom, Says Analyst

However, regardless of the state of the stocks, there remain plenty of skeptics on housing who are questioning just exactly how healthy it is. Barry Ritholtz, CEO of FusionIQ and founder of the blog The Big Picture, sees some of each side of the argument.

"Currently, housing is one of the few bright spots in the economy," he says in the attached video. "The problem with housing continues to be it's not an organic recovery, or stabilization, to use a better word. The [Federal Reserve has] driven rates down to inconceivable levels."

RELATED: QE3 Good for Homeowners, But Even Better for Banks

Foreclosures, Ritholtz says, are now rising after banks had put many of them on hold to sort out the robo-signing debacle, and he's "expecting that to continue to gather momentum."

"I'm comfortable saying housing has stabilized, but I'm not buying the 'we're in a full-blown recovery' meme," he says.

By spring, we should know which side is right on housing -- that is, whether a legitimate turn is upon the market or more weakness lies ahead, he says.

Investors, economists and homeowners themselves have no shortage of data to scour every month. Earlier this week, for example, the Commerce Department reported that housing starts rose in October to a seasonally adjusted yearly pace of 894,000, up 3.6% from the prior month. Apartment construction was the strong metric, while single-family home builds eased slightly. However, single-family construction permits were at a multi-year high.

Let us know what you think. Has housing stabilized? And what are your thoughts on the mortgage-interest deduction? Should it be left alone or eliminated?
